Andy Tix believes that real education transforms. His approach to college teaching is to connect students with the “great things” at the center of courses. In doing so, he hopes students regularly feel “knowledge emotions” such as surprise, interest, confusion, and awe, as they grapple with experiences he curates to grow to become critical, wise thinkers. Dr. Tix also emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach to learning that seeks to encourage social justice as well as personal and collective well-being. Recent courses he has taught include Introduction to Psychology, Psychology of Religion and Spirituality, Psychology of Personality, Social Psychology, and Psychology of the Holocaust.
Andy has written about his unique approach to education for The Chronicle of Higher Education, Inside Higher Ed, and Times Higher Education. He has been recognized for teaching excellence through the Distinguished Faculty Award at his college, the Outstanding Educator Award from the Minnesota State Colleges and University system, and the Minnesota Psychological Association Award for Outstanding Teaching of Psychology in Community / Two-Year Colleges.
